Hozan Jujutsu teaches the Tsutsumi Hozan Ryu syllabus — a traditional Japanese jujutsu system covering breakfalls, body movement, unbalancing, locking, throwing, and defence against grabs, strikes, and weapons. Training is principle-first and progresses through a formal grading structure.
The dojo is new. The lineage is not. This is a practical self-defence system refined in Western Australia for more than 70 years. Jeremy Millar trains in the de Jong lineage of Tsutsumi Hozan Ryu and continues his own training while running this dojo.

This dojo suits people who want calm, structured, principle-based training. Beginners are welcome — most people arrive with no background at all. What matters more than experience is a willingness to progress slowly, pay attention to detail, and treat training partners with care.
From Year 7 onwards.
This isn't a place for hard sparring, fast belt progression, or learning self-defence in six weeks. If you're looking for competition, intensity, or a quick transformation, there are dojos in Perth that do those things well — this isn't one of them.
Jujutsu is the parent system of several modern Japanese martial arts — Judo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and Aikido all developed from jujutsu traditions. Where those arts narrowed their focus, jujutsu retained the complete system.
What's taught here is Goshin Jujutsu — modern self-defence-oriented Japanese jujutsu — in the form developed and taught by Jan de Jong who began way back in 1952.
The complete curriculum covers joint locks, throws, strikes, ground work, and weapons awareness. Not a sport subset. Not a fitness format. A working system, calibrated to function under pressure.
Tsutsumi Hozan Ryu at this dojo is not a competitive or sport martial art. There are no tournaments and no point-scoring. Training is partner-based and cooperative — students work together to develop genuine capability, with periodic resistance testing to verify techniques actually work. The goal is real capability, not winning matches.
JUJUTSU: A FOUR-WEEK COURSE
Where jujutsu starts.
A structured four-week course for complete beginners. One class a week. Built from the Tsutsumi Hozan Ryu curriculum — the same art taught in ongoing classes, from the beginning. Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons.
WEEKLY TIME TABLE
Where you continue your joruney in jujutsu.
After completion of our First Steps pathway, this is for you. Or If you are graded in a de Jong or Yoseikan lineage already, sign up today to become a regular member of Hozan Jujutsu.
Class times are:
If you've trained in jujutsu before or have a background in a related martial art, you probably don't need our First Steps beginner's course. You need time on the mat, the traditional trial class.
If you have trained in a de Jong or Yoseikan lineage school, your grade will be recognised here also.
Send us a message to discuss.
